July 19th 2021 - Design Commission Public Hearing for Jail

The NYC Public Design Commission is holding a Public Hearing on the Kew Gardens/Queens Borough-Based Jail parking garage on Monday, July 19th at 10:05am. Instructions on how to participate can be found on their website.

From President Dom Pistone on the 83-page presentation: We suggest you note: Page 12 where "future development" means the jail Pages 76-78 show sources of light pollution not there now Page 79 - the shadow in back of the garage is supposed to be the jail but the jail is currently sized at 19 stories not 10 and could go several stories higher at the option of DDC. When asked about this at a presentation made to Community Board 9 several months ago, DDC said that was the jail but had no explanation as to why the rendering did not reflect the actual height.

There are several pages about the community space and the various configurations. There are no plans for any configuration; it will depend on what organization comes up with a plan. Although the presentation devotes several slides to the roof and the plantings the roof will not be accessible to DDC.

All times are approximate and subject to change without notice. Public Testimony: Testimony should be limited to issues of design and aesthetic merit, as that is the Public Design Commission's purview. Members of the public are welcome to testify at public hearings and are encouraged to submit their testimony in writing in advance of the meeting date via email to: designcommission@cityhall.nyc.gov. At the meeting, members of the public will be called to testify in the order in which they signed in and given three minutes to speak. If there are a significant number of people who wish to testify, the Commission, at its discretion, may further limit the allotted time. Items on the consent agenda are not presented. If you wish to testify regarding a design-related issue of a project on the consent agenda, please notify staff as soon as possible via email at designcommission@cityhall.nyc.go
