Yard Waste & Bundled Wood: Old lumber or tree branches must be securely tied in bales no more than 2 feet high and 4 feet long. According to Federal law, all wood from trees on residential properties in Brooklyn and Queens is subject to special handling due to infestation by the Asian Longhorned Beetle - an invasive pest that attacks and kills trees. Before disposing of tree prunings or firewood, residents in these boroughs must schedule an appointment for special Parks & Recreation handling. To schedule an appointment, call 311 or visit the parks websites.
Appliances: Before discarding any freezer, refrigerator, water cooler, dehumidifier, air conditioner, or other type of appliance containing ChloroFluoroCarbon (CFC) gas, also known as Freon, all New York City residents are required to schedule an appointment for the recovery of CFC. You can request an appointment online or by calling the New York City Citizen Service Center at 311. The night before your scheduled appointment, place the appliance(s) at the curb. Department of Sanitation personnel will recover the CFC gas from the appliance(s) and tag them. Tagged items will be removed on your next recycling collection day. For safety reasons, the law requires that DOORS BE REMOVED from refrigerators and freezers before being put out for disposal.
Electronics (E-Trash): The New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act bans the disposal of the following items and requires that manufacturers provide free take-back programs for apartment house residents as of January 1, 2015. This includes computers, TVs, radios, peripherals, keyboards, electronic video game consoles etc. Electronics can be returned to Staples (no TVs), BestBuy, Salvation Army, Goodwill and at collection drives organized by the Sanitation Department. Kew Gardens residents can request a pickup by filling out a request form at the e-waste website.
